The 5 Best Games Coming Early 2018

Next year is going to be a huge year for gaming – these are the 5 best games coming in early 2018.

We’ve had to be a little bit brutal with this list; games such as Sea of Thieves, Crackdown 3 and God of War absolutely deserve mentioning but just didn’t break our top 5.  There is also the possibility of delays but we live in hope that these titles will see a release in the first half of the year.

Here are our 5 best games coming in early 2018:

5 – Monster Hunter World

Despite being an under-appreciated series in the West, Monster Hunter World is making serious strides to win over the hearts of western gamers.

Monster Hunter World players take control of a monster hunter who must, well, hunt monsters. The beasts are varied but are often ferocious and intimidating, and must be slain in frantic heart-pounding battles that take place in a vast, ever-changing world.

In a rare move for me, I’m most excited about the loot in this game. Loot collected from the fallen monsters can be used to create new equipment and armour upgrades styled after the monsters they came from, which opens up all sorts of possibilities.

Visually, Monster Hunter World looks absolutely stunning and if it can get the difficulty level right, could boast a varied style of play similar to Horizon Zero Dawn (our #1 game in our Top 5 Best Looking Games of 2017).

4 – A Way Out

A Way Out is a title with a smaller scale than the others on this list but a game that is just as ambitious.  A Way Out is being developed by Hazelight Studios, the team behind the brilliant Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, and looks to be a cinematic take on the prison escape formula.

To describe A Way Out, think Shawshank Redemption meets Prison Break turned into a cooperative video game and you’re most of the way there.  Sharing the experience between two players, either locally or online, will make this one of the most memorable titles of 2018.

3 – Far Cry 5

The Far Cry series has always been home to gorgeous visuals and challenging environments.  Far Cry 5 is set in Montana and features a plot that initially appeared to be politically charged, though early indications suggest that it not to the extent that has been suggested.

Players can be assured that they will receive a graphically impressive game, boasting a large, diverse landscape and tight gameplay mechanics.  If Far Cry 5 doesn’t steal headlines on release then something is wrong.

2 – Days Gone

We’d almost forgotten about Days Gone, but the release of the open-world biker zombie-fest is right around the corner!  What we’ve seen of Days Gone thus far has suggested impressive visuals, fun shooting mechanics and challenging, fast-paced hoards of “freakers” (read: zombies).

Days Gone faces the challenge of trying to compete in an already over-populated corner of the market, but early indications are good.

1 – Red Dead Redemption 2

The big one: Red Dead Redemption 2 is due for release on PS4 and Xbox One in Spring.

Rockstar has been pretty frugal with information thus far but from what we’ve seen, we can a strong single-player story featuring varied locations suggesting that we can expect a large map.

It will be interesting to see whether the online comes close to that offered by GTA Online, even though Take-Two have been quick to stress that it will not compete with GTA V’s online offering.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Red Dead Redemption 2 will be a huge game in the first half of 2017, and could even be a Game of the Year contender in 12 months time.
