A sign giving a thumbs up in Fallout

Fallout 4 Is Bethesda’s Best-Selling Game Of All Time

Bethesda is home to some of the video game industries leading franchises, including Elder Scrolls, Dishonored and Doom. Fallout 4 has outsold them all.

Fallout 4 was released to much fanfare in 2015, the sequel to the highly successful Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.  Bethesda took the unusual approach of keeping its development secret until E3 2015 when they not only announced that Fallout 4 was in production, but that it was very nearly finished.

Fallout 4 was reviewed favourably and became an instant hit, but few expected the post-apocalyptic open-world title to rival Skyrim in terms of sales.

Bethesda’s marketing executive Pete Hines has now confirmed that Fallout 4 hasn’t just rivalled Skyrim, it has surpassed the Elder Scrolls title and is now Bethesda’s best-selling game of all time.

That’s no mean feat considering the overwhelming popularity of Skyrim, the strength of it’s modding community, and it’s recent remastered editions.

Appearing on the Kinda Funny Gamecast, Hines said “Fallout 4 has gotta be the most successful game we’ve ever launched in our company’s history. More than Skyrim, in terms of what we did.”

GameSpot has reported that Skyrim originally launched in late 2011 and had sold 20 million copies as of 2014.  By contrast, Fallout 4 shipped 12 million copies on its day of launch.

Hines went on to clarify his statement, responding to a Tweet from a fan seeking clarification whether he meant in terms of sales and games shipped.  Hines explained that he has compared the two titles by looking at their figures “over the same time period”, before confirming that Fallout 4 has indeed outsold Skyrim.

With the continued release of stellar Fallout 5 add-ons, including the High-Resolution Texture Pack on February 6, plus the ever growing modding community, Fallout 4 could continue to go from strength from strength.
