New Sonic Mania Gameplay Video Looks Wonderfully Retro

After the heartbreak of Sonic 2006 and Sonic Boom, things are looking up, as this new gameplay video shows Sonic Mania is turning up the nostalgia.

While Mario has successfully been reinvented countless times over the last few decades, the Sonic formula has stuttered and stalled more than it has strived.  Sonic Mania is taking an all new approach by putting the franchise.

Sonic has been put into the hands of fans from the Sonic Community, who are creating Sonic Mania in the ’90s Sonic style, with some elements from classic games and new twists on the formula.

The new video, below, shows and discusses Sonic Mania’s reworked Green Hill Zone, revealing the new areas, new style, and new abilities:

While the soul of the classic Green Hill Zone remains intact, the tweaks to the formula are definitely evident – and Sonic’s new Drop Dash move is an interesting addition to the gameplay.  The Drop Dash move allows Sonic “to Spin Dash as soon as he hits the ground following a jump” if he doesn’t have an active shield.

Sonic Mania is being developed due for release some time this Spring.

The game is being developed by PagodaWest Games with Christian Whitehead and Headcannon, and is due to be released this Spring.
