Steam Breaks Concurrent Players Record (Again)

This weekend Steam broke a record for the most players online at one time with 14,370,167 users. That’s double Hong Kong’s population playing at the same time.

According to Steam’s official Steam’s stats page, the record was set at around 1 PM on Sunday 8th January 2017, smashing the previous record of 12.3 million, also set by Steam, on Sunday 3rd January 2017.

The five games with the most concurrent players online during the record-setting were:

  • Dota 2 (849,970)
  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (661,144)
  • Grand Theft Auto V (109,138)
  • Team Fortress 2 (73,690)
  • ARK: Survival Evolved (74,413)

The top five games are similar to those in 2016 when the top five comprised of Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Fallout 4, Grand Theft Auto V, and Football Manager 2016.

The fact that the record has been set just after Christmas for consecutive years may be due to players playing games bought as gifts, plus titles newly purchased from the Steam Sales.  Who know’s, we may be looking at over 15 million players next year.
