Nintendo Confirm Switch Will NOT Replace The 3DS

The Nintendo Switch is a great hybrid between a home console and a portable console, which has lead to some questioning the future of the 3DS. Nintendo has confirmed there is nothing to worry about.

When asked about the Switch potentially replacing the 3DS come March 2017, Nintendo’s President Tatsumi Kimishima alluded to the survival of the 3DS beyond next Spring.

“Thanks to our software, the 3DS hardware is still growing. So that business still has momentum. And certainly rather than being cannibalized by the Switch, we think the 3DS can continue in its own form.”

In the reveal trailer for the Nintendo Switch, we were shown attractive twenty-somethings taking their new piece of tech to rooftop parties and whatnot, suggesting that the Switch could be a direct replacement for the 3DS.

While maybe one person in the universe will actually do that, the 3DS remains a much more portable option and is also a much more viable option for much of Nintendo’s target market; children and pre-teen gamers.

As a father, I for one would not allow my daughter to take a Nintendo Switch out to play at the park. But, a 3DS? Sure. It’s a more affordable piece of tech, and it is better equipped for drops and knocks.

The Nintendo Switch will add an interesting dynamic to home gaming, but I for one do not consider it the future of mobile gaming. How about you?
